We commonly hear from clients, “I would like to be able to connect to my office computer from home or while out of town.” While there are many ways to do this, a VPN - Virtual Private Network is the most secure and best way to do this. You can use other solutions as well as in Remote Desktop, GotoPC.com, PCAnywhere, and other software, but the BEST and MOST SECURE way to do it is with a VPN.
Once the VPN is created it securely transmits the data over the Internet to your office computer. After that has been established then it is perfectly fine to use a Programs as in Remote Desktop to connect to your Office Computer.
There are a few ways to access the files once connected to the VPN.
First, you can access the files directly over the Internet via your Mapped Drives as if you were in the office. The only downside of this is if the files you are pulling over a large as it would now take quite a while to work on them as they have to go through the Internet. If yo are simply using Word, Excel, and other typically smaller programs then this is not a problem. However, if you are using programs in Quickbooks and other programs that typically have large files, then you will need to look at the Second Option.
The Second Option, is to connect to the VPN THEN connect to Remote Desktop via your Internal IP address. This is just like sitting in front of your computer at your office. The BIG difference is that now you are transferring a Screen Shot and not the files. In other words, you are now transferring something like 100k and not 100,000k over the Internet. Thus the speeds are very fast! You can also make it so Remote Desktop maps your local printer so that you can still print and have them show up on your home office computer.
